Here are the most common questions that the Swedish Pensions Agency get from pension savers and pensioners who live abroad.

Old Age Pension

  • Can I make a forecast on the net about my old age pension from Sweden?
    You can through the website order a PIN code. The PIN code will be sent to your home address and then you can use the PIN code to make a forecast. To make a forecast on the website, you must have a Swedish personal identity number and also have your address registered at the Pensionsmyndigheten.When you receive your PIN code you can log in via the website and make a forecast about your future pension. The forecast is calculating that you have lived in Sweden for 40 years. If you have lived for less than 40 years in Sweden, your pension will be lower than the forecast is illustrated. For those who are resident abroad, the forecast can show a higher pension than what you have earned to.  The guarantee pension is paid if you are resident in the EU/EES countries or Canada. If you live outside these countries you don't have the right for a Guarantee pension.

  • How do I apply for old age pension from Sweden if I live abroad?
    If you live in the EU/EES you should apply for your Swedish old age pension by the Pension authority where you live or by the pension authority in the country where you were last insured for residence or work. This applies even if you live in a country that Sweden has a convention with. If you have moved outside of Sweden and has never worked in your new country of residence, you may contact us at Pensionsmyndigheten to get information about what to do. This applies even if you live in a country outside the EU/EES country or countries that Sweden has convention with. If you live outside EU/EES or a convention country you can find the application form at at this website - Forms and brochures.If you worked and lived in several EU/EES countries, you should apply through the pension authority in the country that you last were insured for work or residence. This country will then send the application to all countries where you have been insured. The guarantee pension is paid if you are resident in the EU/EES or Canada.

  • How long does it take to get the pension after I sent my application for old age pension?
    Apply for your old age pension early. You must apply for the Swedish old age pension by yourself. You should apply in good time. If you worked or lived in several countries in Europe, you should apply about six months before you want to receive the pension.

  • I have moved to another country, what happens to my pension and what do I do?
    Your pension may be changed if you move to another country. The Guarantee pension is paid if you live in the EU/EES countries or Canada.

  • I've received an orange envelope, why and what is it?
    All who are born in 1938 and later receives the orange envelopes every year. There you can see a summary of how much you have so far accumulated for your old age pension and you also get a forecast of what it can provide in old age pension from Sweden. The orange envelope is based on that you have lived in Sweden for 40 years. If you have been resident for less than 40 years in Sweden, your pension will be lower than forecast shows in the orange envelope. For those who are resident abroad, the forecast can show a higher pension than what you have earned to. The guarantee pension is paid if you are resident in the EU/EES countries or Canada. If you are already receive an old age pension than the orange envelope shows how much you receive each month of the year.   • Why should I notify if I change my marital status or receive a foreign pension?
    Marital status is included in the calculation for your pension from Sweden. The size of your pension is affected if you are married or single. Your foreign pension may affect your Swedish old age pension pension, thus you should always notify Pensionsmyndigheten if you have new or changed foreign pension, new or changed foreign occupational injury annuity.

Payment and bank accounts

  • How do I change bank accounts?
    Any changes regarding address and/or payment details have to be in writing including the original signature of the person concerned (or person having relevant Power of Attorney).   • Why have I not received my pension payment yet?
    To transfer a payment to an account abroad usually takes 3-5 banking days. Thereafter, it is possible for Serviceärenden at Pensionsmyndigheten to take concrete measures to trace the payment.
